The Maine Ocean School admission criteria is not limited to an applicant's GPA (grade point average), as is customary in many other magnet schools. Our foundational belief is that an applicant’s GPA is not the greatest predictor of potential achievement. We developed the criteria below to evaluate applications and to provide a framework where applicants can present evidence that supports their potential to succeed at Maine Ocean School.

  1. The Application must include the student’s demographic information and official transcript(s) from an accredited high school. If the applicant is a home-schooled student, official transcripts of academic work completed outside of the homeschool program and/or an academic portfolio with a detailed description of the homeschool curriculum must be submitted.

  2. Essay/Video in which the applicant discusses their interest in the ocean, how attendance at Maine Ocean School aligns with their future goals, and a discussion of collaborative involvement within their current school and community.

  3. 3 References from someone not related to the applicant that provides objective information about the applicant’s leadership skills, work ethic, interpersonal skills, collaboration with peers and adults, potential for success, and academic preparedness.

The Admissions Team will only review complete applications and all applicants will receive written notice of admission status. Those applicants who are not immediately admitted will receive written notification including feedback for future resubmission.
